The preferred method of irrigating greens is to check the volumetric moisture content with a moisture meter and then only apply water to the areas on the green that need it. This process allows the superintendent to maintain optimum turf health and playing conditions while also conserving water. The practice of hand watering is not to be confused with “syringing”, which is applying a light mist of water with the irrigation heads to cool the plant during hot stressful periods.
Stephen has been successful implementing aggressive cultural practices during the summer months to prepare the playing surfaces for a season of firm and fast playing conditions. In addition, light and frequent vertical mowing, topdressing and solid tine aerifying are imperative during season to maintain healthy turf and optimum playing conditions.
The integration of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic viability; we can meet the high demands and meticulous conditioning without compromising the needs for future superintendents. Reduced maintenance areas and planting native vegetation can add aesthetics to a golf course while minimizing labor, pesticides, fertilizer, and water.
Firm and fast conditions begin with implementing sound summer cultural practices. Light and frequent vertical mowing, topdressing and rolling are imperative during season in delivering firm and fast conditions. Heavy topdressing of the shortgrass is another good practice for improving the overall drainage and firmness of the playing surface.
Stephen has successfully completed multiple complete golf course renovations as well as numerous small renovation projects. He has worked closed with world renowned architects such as Pete Dye, Brian Silva, Rees Jones, Jason Straka, and Dana Fry. He recently completed a complete irrigation system renovation at West Bay Club working closely with Leibold Inc.
