About Stephen Stortz

Stephen is an accomplished superintendent with over 18 years of experience delivering exceptional golfing conditions at some of the best courses in Florida. That list of courses includes two top 100 ranked golf courses in the US (Calusa Pines and TPC Sawgrass). Additionally, Stephen and his staff at West Bay Club have achieved a ranking of #142 in Golf Week’s Top 200 Residential Clubs. Stephen prides himself on elevating the conditions of every golf course his name is attached to, consistently exceeding members’ expectations.

Stephen has extensive experience with golf course construction and full renovation projects. He led a full golf course renovation of the South Course at Shadow Wood Country Club and played a major role in the complete renovation at Palm Beach Country Club. He has successfully completed numerous other construction projects, including irrigation, new practice area construction, and re-grassing of multiple courses throughout his tenure.

Stephen is a polished written and verbal communicator with the membership, senior management team, and his staff. He has built strong professional relationships with each member of the board as well as the entire senior management team. Teamwork is always top of mind for Stephen, as he is never shy to lend a helping hand when other departments are in need. Stephen takes great pride in his staff and is intentional about setting aside time for team building, allowing him to get the most out of his team and retain quality employees. This has resulted in some of the most well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing golf courses.

Stephen’s philosophy on budgeting is that effective budgeting begins with proactive financial planning, which involves a close examination of historical financial data, market trends, and foreseeable operational challenges. His last four years of financials demonstrate excellent forecasting accuracy—consistently coming in just under budget each year in collaboration with his controller.
